I owe money to a bank; I might be in ChexSystems… Can’t I just go to a new bank?

It is always important to pay your outstanding bank account debt. Be advised, that just because you pay the bank, that WILL NOT clear you from ChexSystems, and you may still be declined a bank account.

The bank considers you a risk, and you need to prove to them, in writing, that you are no longer a risk.

They need to forgive you for whatever took place in the past.

Follow these steps as a guide:

  1. Negotiate the debt with the bank(s)
  2. Try to get a Paid in Full letter with a line stating that you will be removed from the bank.
  3. After the account is paid, contact the bank in writing; think of a persuasive letter to get them to forgive you.
  4. Continue to monitor your ChexSystems Report.
  5. Most importantly… Be Persistent!

If you are in ChexSystems and you go to another bank trying to be sneaky, they will decline you. Each time they decline you, it adds a new inquiry to your ChexSystems report. Solve the problem at it’s source.

Do not avoid it.

  2. Jun 9 2010

To find out why you are in ChexSystems, you will need to order a copy of your ChexSystems report. There is a link available on the website. Do you have an idea about what bank is reporting you?

    Be persistent!

i reported check fraud to my account with “BANK OF AMERICA” in aug/2007 because of stolen check’s and book’s. automatically you would think the account would’ve been shut down for investigation. they investigated and paid $300 for 1 of several check’s that kept coming in and charged me with $1,738.70 of bounced fee’s. one month later they shut it down and over a year later, not knowing i was in “checksysem’s” , i was denied a checking account at “highland’s union bank”. “BANK OF AMERICA” had flaged me a high risk.the fraud dept. sent me a “merchant’s courtousy letter” and told me 2 fax 2 checksystems, experian, ect.. i’m not in telecheck or certagy, and not on credit file. i’ve tryed several times 2 clear the matter up. this has been going on 4 3yrs,but it’s apparent “BANK OF AMERICA ” is blameing me ,because they never shut the account down when i reported “fraud”.everytime i called, they sent me 2 a differant dept.!!customer serv, recovery mngmnt.,account closier dept.,identity theft dept.,and check fraud dept.i’m disabled from a sevier car accident back in “98.i recently applied into “itt-tech” and majoring in “information system’s adminasrator” because i want off disability and i can’t even open a bank account. i will never pay “BANK OF AMERICA” 1,738.70. because i do not owe it!!! i reported it to the “federal trade comm., but havn’t got a responce in 2 year’s. i guess i’m not important enouph . i would be willing 2 pay half of the money i dont owe just so “BANK OF AMERICA” might pull me out of chechsystems. i’m about 2 the point where i really just want to take “BANK OF AMERICA” to court, but that would cost me more anxiety and stress i dont need.i just spoke with a “roger”, “stacy jones” and “emanual” from the baltimore office of rec.serv., i wanted 2 try and settle it, but before i could get the word’s out of my mouth, roger tell’s me they will never pull the flag off and lauphed like this was funny.stacy put me on hold and the phone disconnected. two day’s later,(july 8th/2010) i get a call from “ashley” from “BANK OF AMERICA”S” check fraud dept. asking me 2 call her back at 888-701-0075 ext # 6558766. ,so she could ask me what happened three yrs ago!! they should change there name from “BANK OF AMERICA” TO “BANK OF GREEDY CORPORATE AMERICAN’S “or not” WHO WANT TOO STEAL MONEY FROM THE DISABLED PEOPLE AND THEN HAVE THE GOVERNMENT BAIL THEM OUT (only if they dont steal enough to pay off all the polaticians they helped get into office,or they need a new pair of $3000 shoe’s).THANK’S “BANK OF AMERICA” for putting me in dept. and checksystem’s and to all the yrs of stress, anxiety and rude employees.

    Dear Roland,

Unfortunately the situation you are experiencing is not at all uncommon and several of our clients suffer from the same type of no-response/dis-respect. Did you ever get a police report on the incident? If not, you still can. Order a free ChexSystems Consumer Report through our website Once you get the report, file a incident report with your local police station. Once that is done; feel free to respond with any questions. When we handle this process, it roughly take us between 60 and 90 days to clear you from ChexSystems.

i cannot get a bank account because i owe one bank can you tell me why

  8. Jul 28 2010

    Dear Amanda,

When you owe a bank money and they shut down they account because you didn’t pay the amount due under their allotted time frame, they immediately report you to ChexSystems. Paying the debt owed does NOT remove you from ChexSystems. In order to get removed, you need to get the bank to forgive you and remove the negative remark they put against you. Try contacting your banks Risk and/or Fraud department.

years ago i had a bank account and i went to cash some checks that were money orders and i figured if anyone would know if they
were good, it would be the bank. they cashed $22000 money orders and when they were found out to be bad they closed my account and said I had given bad checks and I cannot open another account anywhere, can you help me?

  13. Dec 27 2010

    Dear Stephanie,

If you contact the Recovery Department of the bank they should have information on what you owe. This is a department you can reach through customer service. Once you reach Recovery, they should let you know if you have a debt owed with them or if they sold it to a Collection Agency. Also, on your ChexSystems Report, it may show the debt owed.

  14. Dec 27 2010

We do have example letters in our ChexSystems Removal eBook. We combined our knowledge and success with getting our clients removed at an affordable cost. You can find a copy on our website:

  15. Dec 27 2010

    Dear Connie,

When you endorse a check and deposit it into your account you take full responsibility. You don’t deposit checks into your account to see if they are good. They most likely have now reported you for Suspected Fraud. There is always hope to resolve matters like this. Please contact us if you have any more questions.

  17. Dec 28 2010

    Dear Sue,

The only way to remove yourself completely is by dealing directly with the bank that reported you. Only they can do a permanent removal.

I owed money to TD bank and they sent it to a collection’s agency. Then I opened up a new account with Chase (and they let me – no mention of my prior debt). I’m scared they will learn about my old debt and freeze my new account. Is that possible?

  19. Feb 20 2011

    Dear Lauren,

If you are still being reported to ChexSystems by a bank, any current bank account you have may be subject to being shut down. You should resolve what took place with TD Bank to assure that you will not create any future problems. When a bank sees you as a risk, they can end their relationship with you without much notice.

Today I logged on my “Bank of America” online account. cause I knew my monthly fee was coming up. When I logged on my account was closed. I called BOA and they explained when they took their monthly fee it cause me to be $2.12 short therefore the account was closed. They told me to go to a BOA and pay and they will open me a new account. Once I get there I explained the situation to them and then they refused my $2.12 as payment and told me i was being reported and because of this I can now not open an account with them which means I won’t be open an account at any Bank for up to 5 years!
This is bullshit! How can I dispute this? how can they refuse my payment and at the same time screw me where I can’t open a checking account anywhere else?
But keep in mind I can keep my savings account opened at BOA. Why is one account OK to have but not the other?

how do i know if i am beeing reported for check fraud? my exwife told me that someone was looking for me and that i needed to call her mother because they went to her house looking for me this she said happened in 2010. I didnt beleive her because I have never written a bacd check. She just recently told me that I wrote bad checks and that she told me not too and that I keep writing them, only becasue I’am reporting her to the welfare fraud unit. I moved out from our home only taking my clothes, I left eerything else behind. How do I know if she didnt write a check under my name? Can I get a copy of the written checks if that is the case, and can I sue her if it turns out she wrote them. Since I never lived at her mothers house I dont see why I would have someone looking for me at ther house for bad checks. I need help!

I made some gargantuan errors in judgment in my early 20s, and now owe a bank money. I want very much to repay them; living with the debt over my head is not really living at all. I am starting a new, steady job who has direct deposit only, and I need a bank account. I can’t pay back the debt to the original bank in one fell swoop, due to the size of the necessary reparation, but would love to have it taken care of within a couple months. Are there any banks who will grant me an account, even with my debt, so that I may start rebuilding my life?

Is there a certain amount of years to have your Chexsystems report cleared? My Husband currently has 9 damaging items on his reporttg, 6 out of 9 were not his fault, they even say “suspected fraud activity” on there because we reported it to Bank of America FOR FRAUD immediately which was in December 2007/January 2008, it was Paypal related! So now he’s stuck with 9 bad marks on his Chexsystems report. Besides contacting the banks, we have done that for years and have gotten no where, is there something else we can do or will it just eventually fall off?
    Thanks

In response to Admin’s response to Lauren 02/2011: If the bank ends your relationship what happens to your funds in their possession? If they just decide to end your relationship without notice can they also keep your money and give it to the other bank you owe money to? or do what they please with it? something that preposterous would not be the least bit surprising coming from a large bank like US or BOA. Its strange that the kid stealing a slab of ham to eat might serve jail time when these bankers steal billions and at the most get criticized a little. God help the USA.

HOW IS THAT THEY CAN REPORT SOMEONE FOR FRAUD BUT THEY ARE NOT EVEN INVESTIGATING..I GUESS IM JUST AUTOMATICALLY GUILTY?I GUESS I JUST STOLE MY OWN PURSE..BANK OF AMERICA SUCKS!! THEY RATHER SEND YOU A BILL FOR THEIR MISTAKES AND NOT EVEN TAKE THERE TIME TO INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE.

Hey, I opted out of the “overdraft protection” so my debit card would be declined instead of overdrafting my account, but of course, chase allowed a charge to go through. They let 2 other charges go through after that! I hate banks now and will only deal with them for a savings account to make money off them.
Long story short, I owe chase 70 bucks, didn’t pay it, and now some company has made it to where I can’t cash my paychecks, even at a check for cash place. How do they expect me to pay them back if they don’t allow me access to my money?

Someone I knew used my BoA debit card information and through the span of a week spent thousands of dollars on online transactions, ie booking hotels and flights and even paid their phone bill. They also threatened me and my family if I reported it. The account is in negative approx. $5,000. About a year has passed now and I haven’t explained myself to the bank or filed a police report. What is the best way to start making amends for my debt? I now just want to take full responsibility and handle it by setting up a payment plan.

I had a chase bank account 5 yrs ago and left it owing them money, however it does not show on my credit report. I recently opened an account with them online by transferring funds from a different bank account I have. This was Saturday 3 business days ago and my money has not yet shown up though it is gone from the bank I transferred out of. Could they have possibly just taken my money for my debt without telling me? I don’t think that’s right. Why would they allow me to open another account with them in the first place

Hi When I was about 17 or 18 I was with my family at a public gathering and some people were walking around trying to get people to get accounts with Bank of America. (At the time I didnt know ANYTHING about banks. I just moved on my own and was never talked to about bank accounts or anything.) One of the guys told my sister and myself that if we signed up for an account they would send us a $50 check. (Now that i’m older and I think about it, it doesnt sound right) but we signed up and maybe a few weeks later I got a card in the mail from Bank of America. So when I was down and really needed a few things from the store I used the card and i spun exactly $50. Next thing I know I was getting statements in the mail saying that I overdrew and had all these overdraft fees. It pretty much added up to 300 some odd dollars. I think that was false advertising and I dont know what to do about this situation. PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE OUT WHAT I SHOLUD DO.

About a year or so ago, I went to a convention which in turn overdrafted me. I work retail so my hours would go up and down. But, I still notified the bank that as soon ask had the money I would pay it off. Long story short, about 3 weeks go by and I check my savings account. My money is gone and I call the bank to find out what happened and who took the money. The bank told me because I was overreacted in my checking account they took the money from my savings and paid off the checking and closed it out. First off I was highly pissed when I heard that but relieved at the same time. Fast forward to now, I have a checking account with another bank and I wanted to open an account at another bank as my wedding money. I was denied an account; a few weeks later I got a letter stating that I was denied because I owed to my past bank. My question is how is that possible when the bank took money from my savings to pay the checking debt and then closed the account? What steps can I take to clear this matter up? I’m older and wiser now and getting marrkied in 315 days…..Please help me with matter….thank you.

Hi there, I’m hoping you can give me some advice. I have two negative reports from US Bank on my Chexsystems account. Yesterday it was the exact five year mark since US Bank reported it. I called Chexsystems this morning to make sure it was removed and they said yes, my report is cleared completely. They said the US Bank stuff was removed at midnight last night. Then I went to open an account with a local bank and they say that Chexsystems is still declining me and it shows the US Bank stuff. Does it take some time for the banks to get updated? Maybe since Chexsystems cleared my record last night, it takes one business day for it to officially clear? I don’t know…any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi, I made a poor decision when I was younger. I put a bad check into my account knowing it may not clear. Well it didn’t and BOA closed my accounts and put suspected fraud on chexsystems. My question is once a make payments of my owed BOA accounts and go through chexsystems to have my name removed, how long do I have to before A. It’s completely removed and B. i can open a bank account? Has anyone used the chexsystems removal process and does it really work? Please help out with real feedback?

  45. May 17 2012

    Dear Ari,

If ChexSystems removed the bank risk because it passed the 5 year mark according to the FCRA guidelines, then it should be appear in any banks system. There are two known cases of this happening which are 1) If the bank personally banned you from ever banking with them again. (Yes they can do this) and/or 2) They denied you in the past, and they are looking at old note to decline you.

I would suggest ordering a current copy of your ChexSystems report to show the Branch Manager of that bank that you are no longer a risk. This should be enough for them to work with you. If not, then go to another bank and it should not be a problem.

  46. May 17 2012

    Dear A C,

It is important that you work out a payment arrangement with Bank of America; however, it is their discretion to delete you from ChexSystems. Most banks will report the account as PAID in FULL, and may offer you a second chance account depending on why and how long ago you were reported.
